The Bat Lady Next Door

November 30, 2007

I live next door to a bat. Really. A bat who goes to work everyday, pays taxes, drives a car, flies on airplanes and leads a relatively normal human life.

She works as a nurse by day, but at night she is a certifiable bat. I doubt her coworkers even know she is a bat, but I do - and now you do too.

Maybe she’s a vampire bat? Hence the reason she works in a hospital for those nightly “feedings,” except vampire bats live in the warm tropical countries of central and South America, not Los Angeles.

A vampire bat needs to drink about half of its body weight every night which is about a tablespoon of blood. Hmmm, I wonder if the hospital where she works ever has blood shortages?

She lives in darkness - literally! Though she moved in several months ago, she still has boxes stacked on the floor that haven’t been unpacked yet.

She doesn’t have any furniture, not even curtains on her windows, so anyone can see inside her house.

When I return from my nightly walk, I see the light of her refrigerator illuminating her face, but she won’t turn on any lights.

She reads in the dark, eats in the dark, and talks on the phone in the dark, all at the kitchen table.

I told you, she’s a bat. She flies with her hands, (bats are the only true flying mammals in the world) and sees with her ears (echolocation helps them navigate in total darkness by sending a high frequency that bounces off objects. They hear these echoes and locate, identify, and capture moving prey while flying through the dark.)

There is a large clothing rack in the window upstairs which I think she probably sleeps on while hanging upside down.

My bat neighbor is part of a world population of more than ten billion. They have been around for at least 50 million years. Despite this incredible length of time they still look much like their fossil ancestors.

Bats are one of the most misunderstood animals. They are gentle, intelligent animals that are quite timid when it comes to interacting with humans. (Come to think of it, I have never seen her “interacting” with humans, certainly not in her home.)

A bat is a trogloxene; from the Greek words "troglos" (cave) and "xenos" (guest.) They are temporary cave residents which freely move in and out of the cave. Bats are of the order Chiroptera, Latin for "hand-wing."

I do find it strange that she doesn’t have any lights on, not even candle light. All she has to do is get curtains so she can turn the lights on, or even put paper on the windows so she won’t be seen, but she would rather stay in the dark - and that’s the sad thing.

Though Helen Keller was deaf and blind, her life was totally illuminated. She even said, “If I, deaf, blind, find life rich and interesting, how much more can you gain by the use of your five senses!”

Our lives are only dark because we can’t see the light. Often times, it’s only a switch on the wall, or a switch in our consciousness to help brighten our living space - the space our Soul calls home.

For some reason my neighbor doesn’t want to take simple steps to illuminate herself and thus illuminate her life.

She would rather wear a veil of darkness. Some people don’t necessarily like living in darkness, but they don’t know how to hit the switch.

I can’t force her eyes to see. I can't force them toward the light. She must be ready to accept light in order to see.

I can only offer her love and compassion and sometimes that’s all it takes to remove the veil of darkness.

Once that veil is detached, there is such a light and lightness in our world. Darkness is a heavy burden. A bough that weighs us down and when the bough breaks, the cradle will fall along with our will and willingness to get up.

We have to partake in the art of seeing. We can’t let darkness obstruct our vision. If we can’t see where we’re going, we wind up going in circles, staying in one place or bouncing off the walls (like a bat.)

Like Helen Keller would say, “It is a terrible thing to see and have no vision.”

Don’t let darkness prevail. Move towards the light. Bask in the brightest heaven of invention. Let the light of your love illuminate the path in your heart.

Happy bright weekend everybody.

Good Friday afternoon to you, Alexys !
Such an excellent way to show the comparison between light and darkness, Alexys, between reaching out and being closed down.
Wonderful post. Illuminating :)

I don't much care for main lights on, I tend to use table lamps. The main light is a bit too much.

The order Chiroptera is usually divided into two orders now, Microchiroptera and Macrochiroptera. Not quite sure why.

Is she a vampire bat?

Thanks Alexys, for sharing such an enlightening post. I like the qoute:
“It is a terrible thing to see and have no vision.”
God bless.

Oh you're wonderful,

Hilarious, wise and absolutely wonderful,

Love the thought of this lady hanging upside down from her clothes rack. LOL

We all have our 'bat'/batty moments... where we want to retire to the batcave, and hang up our wings for a while (and maybe put on our batman costume and say things like holy kamoly batman! ;))... But the light is always there... waiting for us... as you so eloquently describe my friend... Its like we're a lamp with a chord... whether we're connected or disconnected to spirit, lit up or not, is always our choice.

Love and laughter my friend,

Maithri

Ooo... another good post (was wondering, from the bat, how you'd lead it to today's lesson, and you did it so well... :-)). To walk in the light....

Annie,
Thank you. I really appreciate your comments from your sick bed. Feel better dear.

Sending you warm cyber ((((hugs)))).

Crushed,
At least you turn on some sort of light, but she doesn't. Megachiroptera means large hand-wing and Microchiroptera means small hand-wing.

She very well could be a vampire bat except vampire bats live in the warm tropical countries of central and South America. A vampire bat needs to drink about half of its body weight every night which is about a tablespoon of blood.

Maybe she flew into the country illegally using someone else's passport. That's probably why she works in a hospital - for those 'extra' feedings. ;D . The hospital a great cover though.

Surjit,
Isn't it a prfound quote. Helen Keller was brilliant.

God bless you too my friend.

Alexys Fairfield 10:28 AM

Maithri,
It's always fun to laugh with you. I am going to have to stake her place out so I can snap a picture of her hanging from her clothing rack. LOL!

"Its like we're a lamp with a chord... whether we're connected or disconnected to spirit, lit up or not, is always our choice."

That is so beautiful. You bring so much light to my Soul. Thank you my dear.

Alexys Fairfield 10:30 AM

Eve,
Walking in light means that we chose to illuminate the darkness.

Btw, I hope that your "retirement" was a nasty hoax. We need you here with us.

RubyShooZ 6:55 AM

Okay, I'm confused. Are you serious in your post? Please remember, some of us are very gullible in some areas...like I am.

Mostly I am very trusting but somehow this bat woman ... it sounds "fishy".

Maybe I'm just off today. Hm.

Peace always, love and light.

Alexys Fairfield 10:15 AM

Ruby,
Don't be alarmed or confused. That's just my sense of humor because she lives in the dark (like a bat.)

I hope I have cleared your confusion.

Sending you lots of clarification and (((hugs))).

Max 10:51 AM

Hey Alexys,

LOL LOL LOL LOL This post is amazingly amusing!
How I do understand you...I too have a bat for a neighbour *nodding*! And people don't seem to realise it, but I swear I see her glittering incisive tooth every time she says "Good morning"....

"There is a large clothing rack in the window upstairs which I think she probably sleeps on while hanging upside down." - LOL LOL LOL LOL this is cracking me up *nodding* LOL LOL....

Are you sure that your neighbour doesn't have a condition of some sort? Perhaps she is depressed...I can't imagine myself living in darkness: it's terrible!
How old is she anyway? Cause when I was younger I used to have these infantile thoughts about me being a vampire, and then I would walk in darkness...of course, when I turned 15 it was all over...I grew up! Perhaps the bat neighbour is still stuck in one of those phases...
It's either that, or you should look out for your neck lol *nodding*.

I have always wondered if vampires really existed...but if they did, what a wretched form of life, don't you think so?

"It is a terrible thing to see and have no vision" - indeed. In Portuguese we say "pior que o cego é aquele que não quer ver" (transl: worse than being blind is not wanting to see) *nodding*.

Amen. Let the light in your heart indeed :).

I wish you a blessed week (this was a nice way of starting it) :)!

Cheers

Alexys Fairfield 12:55 PM

Oh Max,
We have so much in common. Those vampire teeth can be a bitch sometimes can't they? I like your biting humor and sharp wit. (wink)

I never thought about her having a condition. She's single and in her 30's. She is usually very friendly and I don't see any outward signs of depression, but you bring up a good point. (get it?)

"I have always wondered if vampires really existed...but if they did, what a wretched form of life, don't you think so?"

I know. I don't think it's a way to live. The Ann Rice books glamorize them a bit too much, but to me they are a little creepy.

Wishing you a week of blessings and love my dear.

Max 10:29 AM

Alexys,

"We have so much in common." - yes, I have noticed that :).

"Those vampire teeth can be a bitch sometimes can't they? I like your biting humor and sharp wit. (wink)" - LOL yeah, they can be a total bitch *nodding*. Thank you, dear *bowing* :).

I got you, girl :). She's in her 30's...hum...interesting; then perhaps she broke up with her boyfriend (some doctor at the hospital) *shrugging*. She must have something cause nobody lives in the dark (not that I know of lol).

Vampire "life" is not a way to live, indeed *nodding*. Ann Rice books...never read them, can you believe it? The lady, herself, looks creepy...

"Wishing you a week of blessings and love my dear." - thank you, Alexys :). And I wish you the same :).

Cheers

Alexys Fairfield 12:41 PM

Max,
You are so insightful. (you little detective you ;D) I think she broke up with her German boyfriend a while ago. (maybe she never got over him?)

I will have to get to the bottom of it.

I have never read Ann's books either. I saw the film. "Interview With The Vampire," it wasn't very good. She does look a little like Vampira. Very dark energy. Maybe she's just blood thirsty?

Take care.

Max 6:50 AM

Hey Alexys,

lol Must be from all the meditation I practice lol ;). Poor thing, perhaps she hasn't got over him *nodding*. It is hard to get over what people believe to be a true love, right?

"I will have to get to the bottom of it." - lol...but you do well, she might need a friend...

"Interview With the Vampire" was a bad movie, indeed...there was something that didn't quite click (can't say what it was). Of course when I watched it for the first time I was 18, and found it great. But when I watched it again 3 years ago, I found it crappy (pardon my french) *nodding*.

"She does look a little like Vampira. Very dark energy. Maybe she's just blood thirsty?" - LOL LOL LOL LOL maybe, maybe...lol

Cheers

Alexys Fairfield 12:32 PM

Max,
That happens to me too. When I see a film and think it is brilliant. Then years later, Ill see the same film and think, what a piece of...

You have to read the follow up to the 'Bat Lady.'

Cheers
