Think Of Happiness

November 16, 2007

This was co-opted from another website. The author is unknown, but the message is clear.

A 92-year-old well-poised lady who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock with her hair fashionably coifed and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today.

The death of her husband of 70 years made the move necessary.
After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready.

As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, a nurse gave her a visual description of her tiny room.

"I love it,"
she enthused.

"Mrs. Jones, you haven't even seen the room."

"That doesn't have anything to do with it," she replied.

"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged - - it's how I arrange my mind.

I already decided to love it. It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.

Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away - - just for this time in my life."

Enjoy your weekend. Make it a good one. Enjoy your happiness. Make those memories the ones you hang onto and let go of the bad ones and always - - in all ways hang onto happiness.

Maithri,
That is EXACTLY how I would describe YOU my angel.

I love the picture too. How can you NOT love that picture?

Blessings my dear.

It's sad, but sweet... (I did an elective project at some nursing homes last year, and almost everyone is there 'cos their partner died... makes one sad... but she's got a very good attitude, in not being depressed about it all, although I'm sure she has to fight the sadness... wow, 70 years together...)

Hello Alexys,

As always, it is a pleasure to read your Friday posts *bowing*!
First of all: that dog is absolutely cute (I am dog person)!!!!

Second: that old lady is the true mirror of happiness *moved face*. Can you imagine if we all applied in our lives her philosophy? Do you realise how happier the world would be?
I, too, chose to be happy. I refuse to let life run over me. It is much better to allow our lips to draw a smile, to let our souls laugh, to freely surrender to love, than to live gloomy, depressed, and complaining all the time. Plus I have a skin to protect (I am 30, and unlike many of my friends of 28, I don't have a single wrinkle lol lol)! Have I ever told you that, in Portugal, people say "there is no happiness, there are only happy moments"...what an absurd!

Alexys, these words were just great! What a way to start my weekend :).

Have a blessed weekend, and may the Light be with you!

Cheers

Joy and happiness are interesting things. When we hear that happiness is a choice, because of the nature of this culture, we tend to think that means a choice like to have a cigarette. In other words, limiting thoughts, behavior, and emotions to what you want.

Happiness usually comes more from allowing what IS there, completely, and not resisting. Sometimes it's not resisting an impulse to do what you want, but sometimes it's more about feeling the interconnection and beauty that resides in every moment. There's no control in that.

I always love this story. It is very wise. What we see is our choice.

Oh Alexys!

Sometimes, you really DO make me feel all loved up..

Alexys Fairfield 5:58 PM

Eve,
I think the sad thing is that we all have to get old. We don't have a choice in the matter. But it's only superfically sad, if we live to an old age, we should be proud that we survived life.

What's really sad in the truest sense is dying alone without anyone there.

Alexys Fairfield 6:22 PM

Max,
Isn't that dog adorable? He's so conscientious of crows-feet too, hence the sun glasses. Hey have you ever seen a dog with crows-feet? (LOL)

I CAN imagine applying her philosophy to life, in fact, I DO it. That would just be sooo cool if the world did apply her philosophy. It would be a total love fest.

I am so glad that you choose happiness. It's a no brainer and much better than frowning all the time, getting wrinkles, ulcers and high blood pressure. The only lines I want are laugh lines. (LOL) I too am wrinkle free.

"In Portugal, people say "there is no happiness, there are only happy moments"...what an absurd!"

I think that's a profound saying. What I interpret it to be is that happiness is so fleeting, we can hang on to it longer moment by moment and really savor those moments. It's just a different perspective clouded in semantics, but I can appreciate the flexibility of that statement.

Max, I hope you are having an exciting weekend, taking in everything that makes you happy.

May the blessings abound and the light lead the way.

Cheers my darling.

Hi Matthew,
I agree, happiness is just moving yourself away from your thoughts and letting the nuance of living permeate your Soul. It's a choice in a sense that we decide not to be ruled by the universe of our head as opposed to our Soul.

"Sometimes it's more about feeling the interconnection and beauty that resides in every moment."

That's priceless.

Thanks for dropping by, please come again.

Alexys Fairfield 6:35 PM

Mark,
And our choice is what we see.

Alexys Fairfield 6:38 PM

Crushed,
Aw shucks. You really DO have a heart. (wink)

It reminds me of that scene in How The Grinch Stole Christmas, when he was so touched that his heart grew ten times its size.

Thanks

Alexys,

The dog is absolutely adorable!!! :). LOL LOL LOL No, I can't say I have seen a dog with crow's-feet...nope lol *nodding*.

"That would just be sooo cool if the world did apply her philosophy. It would be a total love fest." - absolutely, my dear...absolutely!

Laugh lines...I have plenty of those LOL LOL..no anti-wrinkle takes those away from me lol lol :). "(LOL) I too am wrinkle free." - Amen to that lol.

"I think that's a profound saying. What I interpret it to be is that happiness is so fleeting, we can hang on to it longer moment by moment and really savor those moments. It's just a different perspective clouded in semantics, but I can appreciate the flexibility of that statement." - my dear Alexys, you're an intelligent person (and I adored your interpretation)...however the Portuguese people don't share your thought on it. In fact, they use this saying as a mask to never choose happiness. For example, in Africa you ask somebody how they're doing; they will reply that they are just fine (even if they eyes tell you otherwise). In Portugal, you ask the same and you'll get "Ha, so and so...we have to keep living, right? It's life!"...it's rare to find a person who will tell you "I am great!"...
I met one lady, last Friday, who asked for direction..she was so energetically light that I was even surprised (her smile was from ear to ear...amazing)! She's part of that rare Portuguese group :).

Alexys, I am having a great weekend (even though I had so many memes to do lol), thank you :)! I hope you're having one as well *bowing*!

"May the blessings abound and the light lead the way." - always *tender face*! And I wish you the same...

Cheers

Max,
There is such a dynamism in your Soul that I really love.

"The Portuguese people don't share your thought on it. In fact, they use this saying as a mask to never choose happiness."

Oh, I get it now. Duh! I missed the underlying current. Thanks for clarifying. In that case, that is terrible. How could anyone not even WANT to choose happiness? That's ludicrous.

I appreciate the education on the Portuguese. Now I am better armed (just in case I run into one.)

"She's part of that rare Portuguese group."

I sense the same thing about you. You are amazing and rare.

Sometimes my week runs into my weekend and I don't stop writing for months. I love what I do, so there really is no distinction between week day and weekend, but I know most people who work 9 to 5 really look forward to the weekend to escape the daily grind. I love EVERYDAY that God sends, so to respond to your statement properly, YES, I AM enjoying my weekend like I enjoy my life - - one minute at a time.

Love and joy to you Max and I am happy that we can continue to just enjoy life!

Peace my darling.

Max 7:19 AM

Hello Alexys,

So kind of you *bowing*! :), thank you...

"That's ludicrous." - My thoughts exactly, girl...

"I appreciate the education on the Portuguese. Now I am better armed (just in case I run into one.)" - LOL LOL don't mention it :).

"I sense the same thing about you. You are amazing and rare." - lol thanks, however I was born in Africa...so the energy is different :). The place where a person is born influences a lot one's personality...

I do understand you: sometimes my week runs into weekends too *nodding*. That's what happens when one doesn't have a specific schedule *shrugging*!
"I love EVERYDAY that God sends, so to respond to your statement properly, YES, I AM enjoying my weekend like I enjoy my life - - one minute at a time." - you're my kind of human being :)!!!!!

Peace my darling. - Amen :).

Cheers

Max,
"The place where a person is born influences a lot of one's personality."

And what a good job it has done. You're marvelous!
(and beautifully wrinkle free - - like your Soul. ;D)

LOL and LWM (Laugh With Me!)

Max 12:35 PM

LWY (Laughing with you) LOL LOL LOL...I liked the Wrinkle-free soul: gracious :)!

Thank you so much for your kind words *bowing*!

Cheers
